RE:UP issue 9 was one of the more entertaining issues we’ve put together. The editorial was based on the sounds from the North Sea (Norway, Denmark, Iceland, et al). The design approach was a Disney vs Mid-Century Swedish design, and the results were great. Loads of illustrator work with slight gradations to add dept to the banners and stitching. The spreads became more and more detailed as new ideas kept popping up, thus putting much more work and time into it that we originally anticipated. However, it was all worth it, once we received the new copies from the printer. More spreads after the jump.

For the RE:UP Issue 14 Release Party, we (RE:UP) partnered with Analog, Gravis and Future Snowboarding Magazine to produce a limited edition 7 inch record by professional snowboarder Trevor Andrew featuring SantoGold. To keep inline with the Analog Brand, we limited the palette to Black and yellow, and kept the design minimal. The record was pressed in yellow vinyl, and inserted into a clear poly sleeve with a sticker containing the credits.
We were invited to pitch MTV India in the spring of 2007. The idea below started with an exploding disco ball (pre-HBO Justin Timberlake promos), and we ran with the glimmer theme throughout this direction. As per MTV India’s request, they still wanted to keep the ‘Bollywood vibe’ which we flushed out in the Menu pages and other deliverables. (Agency: PMcD Design)

The Patent Museum in Washington D.C. needed illustrative transitions for a 5 minute movie explaining the importance of patents in today’s business world. To appeal to a younger generation of patrons, the museum decided to center the patents and interviews around entrepreneurs in today’s action sports industries. These graphic transitions utilize patent drawings over textured backgrounds. Each with their own palettes. (Agency: PMcD Design / Animation: IN8)

Emily Haines, the lead singer from our favourite Canadian band, Metric, produced a solo album in 2007 on Last Gang Records. Coming from a lineage of musicians, she wanted to replicate her father’s album from the 70’s. We decided to execute a gold metallic spot color package design. Like a hard cover novel, we used thick cardboard stock for a limited pressing of the initial CD that made the package about 3/4″ thick. The booklet employs printed vellum overlays that mesh images together. The piece turned out wonderful, and was nominated for independent Plug Awards for best album packaging. Other collateral includes 2×12″LP, digipak CD and posters.
